Background Info on Brandon,MS

This entire history section is from the book "Brandon: A pictorial history". You can find this book in the Trustmark bank waiting area in downtown Brandon, Mississippi.

The 3,500,000 acres of land was taken from the native Choctaw peoples by the 1820 Treaty of Doak's Stand which would become known as Hinds County, later Rankin County from that part of Hinds County east of the Pearl River. Indians camped on what is now Town Square where they enjoyed plentiful game and clear bubbling springs. Before white settlers came this site was called "Something Springs" which was the center of Indian activities. Early Pioneers spread the fame of the springs and the campground all the way to the Carolinas.

Traders, missionaries, and early settlers camped near what is now the Town Square and the Vintiques store lot (formally Busick Store). They killed game near the present day middle school and enjoyed the many springs near what is today the Brandon Methodist Church. The "Old Bible Homestead" is the best overnight accommodation for man and livestock, a famous trading post, owned by D.W. Wilkerson in the early 1820s and 30s, south of the present day middle school. Prior to 1828, 31 residents of what is now Rankin County petitioned the legislature to cut the part of Hinds County lying east of the Pearl River and form a new county because the river was a stream characterized by an extensive swamp area ,frequent floods, and few difficult crossings. They asked for a seat of justice near the center for the convenience of their inhabitants who were buying land, paying taxes, and conducting their business interests. The bill was approved and signed by Governor Gerard Brandon on February 4, 1828, for the new County of Rankin, in memory of the late Christopher Rankin, a distinguished lawyer and politician who served Mississippi in Congress from 1819 until his death in 1826. The three Commissioners appointed by the Legislature to select a site for the seat of government were: John Brown, William Steen, and Elijah Gentry. According to the U.S. Government Survey completed before any land could be sold, the site chosen for the county seat was in Sections 15 and 16, Township 5 North, Range 3 East. It was centrally located, and the highest point from Dallas, Texas to Meridian, Mississippi. "It was the famous campground with bubbling springs."

Originally proposed to be Poindexter by a member of the Legislature, the name Brandon was chosen to honor the new Governor, Gerard Chittocque Brandon, a native of Natchez. Knowing that the "famous campground" would be a good place to live, Daniel Fore on July 24, 1828, bought 79.75 acres from the U.S. Government, recorded in Tract Book 1, page 58, price $99.69. He and his wife Mary offered to deed this original 40 acres to the town, October 10, 1829, with an understanding that a courthouse would be erected in the center of the public square. in consideration of this deed, he and his wife would receive half the proceeds of the 40 acres of land or such lots as might be sold out of the 40 acres. Page 17 of Deed Records 1 states" the purpose of this transaction was to *"locate the County Site of Rankin County forever." Wright Fore, a brother of Daniel, and a veteran of the War of 1812, made his home in Brandon. Both of them held public office: Daniel, State Representative and Wright, Sheriff of Rankin County. the original 40 tract was a square, 1320 feet long and 1320 feet wide. Five lots in the square sold for $500 in 1835. Once the boundaries of the city proper were set, it was 1948 before there was a major extension of those boundaries. Minor changes were made in 1886 and again in 1913. The next major extension was in 1978 when Crossgates was annexed. This brought the area to 13 square miles from its original one mile square. The 1940 census showed a population count of 1,129; 2,000 in 1950; 10,500 in 1978. U.S. Postal Historian Records, Washington D.C., show that the Brandon post offie was opened July 7, 1829. Thomas S. Shaw was the first Postmaster of Brandon. He served until Robert C. Crozier was appointed March 1, 1832.

Prior to the town's incorporation, Thomas S. Shaw, completed the 'Original Survey' as shown in a record dated 1830 and known as the "Old Plat of Brandon." Chain carriers were: David Henderson, Zebedee Sommers, and John West. All streets were described and named. Some information included in this Survey Book seems to predate records held in the Office of the Chancery Clerk of Rankin County. Shaw named the 16th Section land in the survey 'Seminary Square of Brandon' and College Street, soon to be the location of an 'academy' in 1832. Poindexter Street became the 16th section boundary line for the town. The official incorporation date for Brandon is December 19, 1831.
