The Importance Of Background Checks - Real Life Story
A few weeks ago I was contacted by a woman named Tanya Weiss who had a story she wanted to share. Since I have this website, and her story fits perfectly with the contents of it, I said sure… Here it is. Read it all!
Let me tell you a story… I promise to make it short.
You see... a few years ago - August 23rd 2006 to be precise - I got a phone call from StarBucks saying they would hire me. Since I had been out of work and out of luck for quite a while I was happy as a lark. I had to agree to go through a background check and everything went fine.
There was just one problem…
I had no one to take care of my kids while I would be at work. I had no relatives nearby and it was too short notice to get in to any of the local kindergartens. I had to find another way to keep an eye of my two-year old- and my four year old girls…
So, I put an ad in the local newspaper as well as hanging up a few notices in local groceries and boards. After a few days, people - women mostly, started calling and I met a few of them at the local coffĂ© house to talk to them and see what they were like. My house was a mess and I thought I had to clean it up before I could have any visitors…:)
Well, a couple of the applicants seemed very nice and I especially liked one girl very good. She gave a really great first impression… So I ended up inviting these two women over for a cup of coffĂ© and for them to meet the kids just to see who was the best around the kids and my poodle, Prince Albert.
I quickly made my decision to hire the twenty-four year old girl as she was so good with the kids and they almost instantly bonded. She said she had taken care of a lot of kids for friends and family in the past and she also gave me a few references.
Unfortunately I did not check her references…
I SHOULD HAVE!
For months I thought everything was as it should. I went to work at 3′o clock in the afternoon and was often not home until 11 or sometimes even 12.30 a.m. When I got home the house was always in good shape and the kids were always sleeping. The nanny, let’s just call her Laura, was usually watching tv but sometimes I found her sleeping on the coach. Not that strange considered the time I got home from work…
Ok. Stay with me here..
One night at 10:45 pm the worst thinkable think happened.
I got a call from the hospital emergency reception telling me there had been an accident and that I needed to come down immediately.
“An accident” I stuttered…
“yes, mam, I am afraid so.” The woman said with an almost whispering voice.
“What…What has happened. Who’s hurt? Is it critical?!?”
I am sure she must have heard my frustration as the woman gently asked me to calm down and then said…
“It’s your kids. Both of them. They seem to have been seriously toxicated but we have stabilized them and the situation is under controll. Can you come down?”
“Absolutely!”. I was shivering…. I was shaking.
I grabbed a cab and remember running into the emergency room…
Toxicated?!
Once I got there I stormed into the reception and was immediately taken to the observation room. My kids were sleeping but the doctor said they would be fine.
Then the police came and took ME away!
…ME!
They thought I had hurt my kids. Fortunately I could explain to them that I had been at work and that Laura had been taking care of my kids so I got released within a couple of hours. Can you believe it?
To make this story short, it turns out that the “nice young girl” who was taking care of my kids was a rave-head with a history of drugabuse and violent behavior. The cops told me so a few days later….
Laura was brought into custody and then interrogated and she eventually broke down and confessed. It turns out that this nice young girl had given my kids small dozes of rohypnol every night so that they would fall asleep once I had left the building. She then spent the rest of the evening watching tv or having friends over. The problem was that this night she had given them too much and when she saw that they got blood shot eyes and couldn’t scream, talk or walk she called the ambulance (luckily!) and said they had been food poisoned or something. She even told the cops that on one occasion she and her boyfriend David had gone out for a meal and ended up being out of the house for almost three hours. In other words….
While she was out having a great time;
My Kids Spent THREE Hours Home Alone - Doped on Rohypnol!
I just can’t believe it. Even if I had checked her references I might not have discovered this kind of behavior as she managed to keep her own problems and drug abuse a well-kept secret but if I had done a BACKGROUND CHECK through IBR or any of the other services out there I could easily have detected this as she already had several convictions for intoxication and violent behavior on her record.
I know it is easy to be wise after the event but I did know about background checks all the time, I just didn’t care to conduct one. Heck, I even had to go through one my self to get the job at StarBucks.
Background Checks are NOT expensive!
They usually cost from 29-50 bucks online and then you will in most cases get unlimited life-time access to their databases. Not so expensive to avoid trouble, right?
My kids turned out just fine but now I always do background checks whenever I can. Maybe I even do them a little bit too often, but heck…:
BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY, right!?
[EDIT: I find this story so sad but the fact is this happens all the time all over America. To be on the safe side I got the name of the hospital and “Laura’s” real name and could actually verify the story. You can do a Free Preliminary IBR Background Check in the form above!]
